GORDON BROTHERS MERLOT - 2005

92% Merlot, Gordon Bros. Estate, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, Gordon Bros. Estate & 3% Malbec, Gordon Bros. Estate make up this Columbia Valley, Washington State wine. 13.7% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Garnet color with cherry-vanilla and spice on the nose. Red fruit, coffee and creamy vanilla flavors. A wine with lots of character, but it is slightly hindered by some a "green" austere edge.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

88+PTS
You have to love the quality coming out of Washington State. For $16 a bottle this is a solid wine and a good value buy given the price of quality California Merlot.

WINE SPECTATOR'S NEW YORK WINE EXPERIENCE - 2007

THE "CRITICS' CHOICE" GRAND TASTINGS
Thursday, October 25, 2007 & Friday, October 26, 2007.

Wine Spectator has become the category killer of wine tasting events. The competition doesn't even come close. While most wine events struggle to find a few "star wines" to highlight their tastings, Wine Spectator's shows only feature top-notch wines. Every wine poured is a top-scoring wine (90 PTS or better), and the best winemakers and wineries in the world are in attendance. That "world" didn't just include the expected countries like France, Italy and Spain anymore as there were wines from such far reaching places as Japan (Mercian Merlot), Lebanon (Chateau Musar) and Slovenia (Movia).

Thomas Matthews, Executive Editor of the Wine Spectator magazine, believes it's the wineries that have done all the work, but he's clearly not taking enough credit for the event. The floor this year was more packed than I have ever seen it. It could be a reflection of the increased popularity of wine, but somehow I feel it has a lot more to do with a growing community of wine readers that are seeking a shared cultural experience.

WS's Wine Experiences and Grand Tours are the biggest brand extensions the magazine has to offer. They directly place the reader into a real world environment where they can taste and converse with the familiar names and faces that grace the wine mag's pages each month.

Split across two floors of the Marriott Marquis, 250 wines were poured at The "Critics' Choice" Grand Tastings. Detailed floor plans make navigation simple, but a calculated plan of attack is needed or one may find the event overwhelming. Making some educated guesses on which wines might run out early (which is one of the unfortunate aspects) and hitting those first, can help avoid disappointment. So if you have your heart set on a few "can't miss" treasures, you need to prioritize. Traditionally, these tend to be the cult Cabernets, First Growths, and Italian superstars.

TASTING NOTES:

Upscale wine in a not-so-uptight atmosphere. The floor filled up fast and was buzzing with conversation. Aisles were more congested than usual which made getting around a bit difficult early on. The dress code called for business attire, but I learned long ago to leave behind the suit jacket. After a few glasses of wine in an overcrowded room that heats up, you'll be glad you did too.

Wine tastings of this caliber tend to call to mind pictures of geeky old men in tweed jackets sipping vino and waxing poetically. Reality couldn't be further from that with a vastly young and hip audience in attendance instilling a sense of fun to the event. At one point during the night, someone even jumped on the microphone and shouted something to the effect of "Ok winos, if you love wine, make some noise!"

The traditional Marriott array of gourmet meats, cheeses, candied nuts and hors d'oeuvres at the buffet tables were balanced by extraordinary wine like a 1997 Masseto Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in magnum and a 1997 Ridge Montebello. The ticket price for the 2.5 hour Grand Tasting cost $250 per person making it a pricey consumer ticket, but guests were rewarded with some serious wine offerings. With extremely expensive wines being poured, you got what you paid for and then some, as long as you had it in you to taste enough wines before palate fatigue set in.

As usual I've listed my top wine honors of the night below in addition to a full list of the rest of the wines poured to provide the outside "spectator" a complete peek behind the curtain of what took place at the event.

Masseto Tenuta dell' Ornellaia 1997 - wonderful earth, smoke, cherries and the personification of the words smooth, structured and balanced. Simply beautiful.

Greg Norman Reserve Shiraz 2001 - Tremendous cranberry and pomegranate flavors. Unlike any Australian Shiraz I've ever tasted. Wonderfully unique and unlike any other wine on the floor.

Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 2005 - Delicious Loire Valley Chenin Blanc dessert wine that will last for 40 years, but who has that kind of restraint?

Betz Family Syrah Red Mountain La Cote Rousse 2005 - The mouthfeel on this wine is astounding for a Washington Syrah.

Chateau Clerc Milon Pauillac 2001 - An enticing and memorable barnyard nose...

Harlan Estate 2003 - Intensely concentrated black and red berry liqueur with an endless finish.

Martinelli Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa 2005 - Tremendous fruit that will shock and awe your palate!

Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille 2005 - Delicate and flinty with sweet honey musk.

Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore 1995 - Smoky chocolate herb-crusted spice!

Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - Black & Blueberry covered violets.

Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford 2003 - Creamy black and red fruit with silky olive-tea.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

95 PTS
An impressive WS event that ranks up there with some of the finest assembled in recent years. Excellent bottle selections from the wineries and a well-balanced representation of the world's finest winegrowing regions. Simply too tempting to pass up. If there was one wine event to attend in 2007, this was it.

CAKEBREAD CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON - 2004

87% Cabernet, 12% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with 14.2% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Dark red color with aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, licorice, sweet tobacco leaf, vanilla and toasty oak. Sour cherry on the finish. Smooth but slightly astringent.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

87 PTS
This Napa Cab isn't really coming together all that nicely. There's also not much here that convinces me that additional time in the bottle will improve this offering. At $70 a bottle, this isn't worth your time or money.

BOGLE PHANTOM - 2004

If you are looking for a Halloween wine, there's nothing better than this ghostly concoction. 54% Petite Sirah, 43% Old Vine Zinfandel, 3% Old Vine Mourvedre with 14.8% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Dark red color with a spirited and alluring blueberry and blackberry nose. Big black currant flavors are accented by mocha, cherry kirsch, and spice. The finish on the second day is a dead ringer for chocolate-covered raisins.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

90+ PTS
There's some heat on this wine that blows off after the bottle has been open for awhile, but hat doesn't take away from the rich and concentrated character of this wine. The Bogle Phantom has become a very popular wine that literally disappears off shelves. So if you see it, grab it while you can. Retails for around $15 - $20.

Friday, October 19, 2007

WINNERS TANK SHIRAZ - 2006

Aussie red from Escadale / Langhorne Creek.

TASTING NOTES:

Purple-red color with aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and flowers. Incredibly jammy with a sweet sugar straw candy finish. A fine tannin fruit bomb.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

89 PTS

If you love big, explosive New World wine this is going to please. It is so jammy that I think it would be best paired with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. A good Australian wine that doesn't get into the fake fruit flavors. Smooth and affordable at only $12 a bottle.

PALO ALTO RESERVE - 2006

After the absolutely amazing debut of the 2005 Palo Alto, the 2006 breaks on the scene. The '05 Palo Alto was hands down the best bargain wine I discovered last year. It was shockingly good and I gave it a stunning 93 PT review. I still have a case left in the cellar and those bottles are getting better by the day.

So it was with eager anticipation that I opened the 2006. This wine was created by the same producers that bring you the heralded Almaviva. A blend of Cabernet, Syrah, and Carmenere. From Concha Y Toro and the Maule Valley in Chile with 13% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Purple-red color with an austere, vegetal nose of green pepper and red fruit. Flavors of cranberry, raspberry, plum, black pepper and a big sour cherry finish. Sharp and tart on the palate with bold acidity.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

87+PTS
What a difference a year makes! Not sure what the final blend was but it looks like there's more Syrah in the mix and less Carmenere. Perhaps it wasn't as good of vintage or maybe the quality of the grapes were pulled back, but this is a huge step down from the previous release. They overdelivered the first time around and this offering simply comes up short. Still an enjoyable wine for $11 but this one won't impress your friends.

VIKING VOUVRAY TENDRE - 2004

100% Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley with 12% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Golden color with burnt match, lemon and yeast on the nose. Almost Champagne-like (minus the bubbles) in mouthfeel and structure. Tart apple, pear, citrus, minerals, are underscored by slight bread flavors.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

90 PTS
Extremely polished, very crisp and refreshing. Acidity is in balance and doesn't overpower the fruit. Wonderful effort and value for $18.

Monday, October 08, 2007

LANGWERTH VON SIMMERN ERBACHER MARCOBRUNN RIESLING SPATLESE - 2003

This German Riesling is of mid-level sweetness with a 10.5% alcohol content.

TASTING NOTES:

Golden color with aromas and flavors of petroleum, apricot, citrus, peach, minerals and apples. Extremely fruity with perfectly balanced acidity. Vibrant with a tremendous mouthfeel and some frizzante.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

93+PTS
This is sensational wine. Sleek fruit harmony. I could give this wine 94 points and justify it. It is so easy and pleasant that you'll forget it's wine with alcohol and start gulping it like gourmet juice. It should cost twice the price. Retails for around $25 and worth every penny.

Friday, October 05, 2007

STEP RD CHARDONNAY - 2005

This Australian Chardonnay is from Adelaide Hills and has an alcohol content of 13%.

TASTING NOTES:

The color of light corn syrup with powerful oak and buttered popcorn aromas when first opened. Lemon-lime soft drink scents eventually emerge giving way to flavors of buttered oak, citrus zest, mineral and pear. Good structure and body with a caramel finish.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

89 PTS
This wine retails for around $12 making it a tremendous bargain. This is a high quality wine although there is a ton of oak upfront which overpowers some of the fruit and nuance. Early aromas and flavors reminded me of Ridge Montebello Chardonnay but the buttered popcorn aspect settled down, especially on day two, and this wine came alive with a lot more depth.

Tuesday, October 02, 2007

TAMARACK FIREHOUSE RED - 2005

This Columbia Valley, Washington red is a blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 24% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Sangiovese, 1% Carmenere, and 1% Malbec.

TASTING NOTES:

Dark purple-red color with sweet, black fruit on the nose. Cherry, black currant, blackberry and hints of boysenberry, cocoa and charred oak. Thick and concentrated with a firm grip on the palate.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

88 PTS
I wanted to love this wine but it just didn't deliver enough for me to love. It almost tastes somewhat flat on the palate. It smelled better than it tasted. Not too much complexity, just sort of straight ahead black fruit that sits there. Pleasant but left me wanting more. Retails for around $16.
