CAKEBREAD CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON - 2004

87% Cabernet, 12% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with 14.2% alcohol.

TASTING NOTES:

Dark red color with aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, licorice, sweet tobacco leaf, vanilla and toasty oak. Sour cherry on the finish. Smooth but slightly astringent.

SCORE & RECOMMENDATION:

87 PTS
This Napa Cab isn't really coming together all that nicely. There's also not much here that convinces me that additional time in the bottle will improve this offering. At $70 a bottle, this isn't worth your time or money.

  1. I agree with you on this one. I have enjoyed Cakebread in the past, particularly the Three Sisters, but this one was not doing it for me. We had it with our Thanksigving Day dinner and was a bit disappointed, especially for this price. This tasted much more like a simple $25 Cab, not a $75 one.

  2. Couldn't disagree more! Had this for the first time last night and was amazed. Not usually a fan of red, but I've seen the light. Buying a case!

  3. O.K. we brought home a bottle of this from the Cakebread Cellar in Napa about 6 months ago and just cracked it open. It's great! Not a $25 bottle... maybe more like a $50. $70??? it's a little much.

  4. Twenty Rows Cabernet for $18 puts this wine to shame. This is a great producer who released a subpar wine for 2004. Don't be blinded by the brand name. If you drank this wine blind next to 5 other good $25 Cabs, you'd probably rank it 5th.

  5. Wow, I couldn't disagree more! This has to be one of the better Cab's that I have tasted, and I have tasted quiet a few. I guess to each their own.
There is a reason why this is hard to come by, because people like drinking this vintage.
